1well since it sounds like you are getting it for the quality and proffesionallism aspect, i would deffinitely suggest a digital slr, more expensive, yes. better, higher quality, more durable, easier to accessorize, also yes! so if u want a good digi cam but still want best non-film pics u can get, buy an slr, most places have the good name-brands like cannon, konika minolta, olympus, and nikon. as far as software goes, for the virtualy endless posibilities and the fact that once you learn how to use it, it's just plain hillarious!! photoshop is awesome, something like Adobe CS. i've used it @ school and plan to get my own copy as i am about where you are, starting digi photography. with PS(photoshop) you can edit pics by removing redeye, adjusting color/contrast and other simple editing, you can also get more intricate with it like adjusting skin tone, removing large skin blemishes, or fixing other digital pictures taken with a lower quality camera(note: still wont be as good as pic taken with SLR, just able to fix major problems) with an slr digi pic, you can take it and make it nearly perfect. also, you can take any picture on your pc or mac, and edit it with regular PS tools like layering, swirling and magic wand tool where you can remove a certain object out of a pic and saving just the object, it does this by detecting a region of similar pixel color. you can adjust magic wand to different sensitivity settings so you can select just the right portion of the pic for what you want.
good luck!!!
