In digital photography, what is gamma?

And when I use it why does it make my photos look so much better, sharper and more vibrant? Does removing the gamma make them look better or putting it in make them lolok better?

Answers:

1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamma_correction

Gamma correction linearizes the brightness across your photograph so that the photograph uses a wider part of the available brightness range, improving the contrast in the photograph.
